Wide Selection of Fillers and Injectables at Greenspring

Greenspring Medical Aesthetics utilizes many different fillers (injectables) depending on the clients particular needs. Each one has its own special qualities to help restore volume and help you look younger. If you have questions about fillers, please contact us and we’d be happy to answer any questions.

Dermal Filler (or Injectable) Background

Injectable fillers are soft tissue fillers injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Many of the visible signs of aging can be traced back to volume loss. As facial tissues thin out, lines become etched around the nose and mouth and cheeks look a little hollow. Dermal fillers can replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance.
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines and soften creases, or enhance facial contours. Treatment using facial injectables can be a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or downtime.

Major Injectable Types

Greenspring Aesthetics has the largest selection of injectables in the Tucson area, including all of the most popular filler types. The four main injectable classes are Hyaluronic acid (think Juvéderm), Calcium hydroxylapatite (think Radiesse®), Poly-L-lactic acid, and Polymethylmethacrylate (think Bellafill®). Here are some of the details of each filler type:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already in the skin. It helps keep skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like. Treatment results last 6 to 12 months or longer before the body gradually and naturally absorbs the HA. Popular product brands available at Greenspring include Juvéderm, Restylane, Perlane®, and Belotero Balance.

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium hydroxylapatite is also a naturally occurring substance, found primarily in our bones. When used in a filler, the calcium particles are suspended in a smooth gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite also helps stimulate natural collagen production. Radiesse® is a CaHA filler used at Greenspring.

Poly-L-lactic acid

Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible synthetic substance. It has been used for many years in medical devices, such as dissolvable stitches. Poly-L-lactic acid products are considered “collagen stimulators,” as their main mechanism to help your skin rebuild natural collagen.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a synthetic, biocompatible substance that has a long history of use in medical applications. As a dermal filler, PMMA remains beneath the skin indefinitely to provide continued support. Offered at Greenspring in this class is Bellafill® which combines collagen with PMMA to create a long-lasting effect.

JUVÉDERM (including JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC) is a smooth gel filler with hyaluronic acid (HA) that is used to instantly smooth away wrinkles around your mouth, nose and other areas when artistically administered. HA is natural to the body so there are no allergic reactions, and skin testing is not required. With just one treatment, you’ll get smooth and natural-looking results that last up to a year or longer. Full correction may require more than one treatment. It is used by both women and men.  Read more . . .

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is the latest advancement in the JUVÉDERM family of injectables, developed specifically for lips. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is a soft, smooth injectable gel that adds subtle volume to the lips and defines the lip border by softening the appearance of perioral lines. Natural substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid that give skin structure and fullness gradually decrease as we age and our lips are not immune.  JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC lip injection uses VYCROSS® technology to smooth fine lines surrounding lips and restore fullness. Because it has a lower hyaluronic acid concentration than other injectables, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is less likely to absorb water resulting in reduced swelling and more natural-looking results. It is also the only lip filler clinically proven to last up to 12 months in the lips with a single treatment.  Read more . . .

We are excited to be among the first in Tucson to offer JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC, the longest lasting hyaluronic acid filler currently available in the United States. It is similar to other hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane®,  Perlane®, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC, JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC and Belotero Balance®. However, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC offers far longer duration.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is the first and only hyaluronic acid filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area. It is used for deep injection to correct age-related volume loss.   JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC gives your face a lift, helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile. It is the longest lasting hyaluaronic acid filler, lasting up to two years.  Read more . . .

Belotero Balance®

Belotero Balance®  dermal filler is FDA-approved for injection into the mid-to-deep
dermis for soft correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. Its versatility makes it strong enough to handle deep treatment areas such as nasolabial folds, yet soft enough to treat less severe areas such as vertical lip lines.

Dr. Cadoux thinks that Belotero Balance is especially well-suited for injection into superficial, fine  lines.  He has found it to be a superior filler for delicate areas around the eyes.  Belotero Balance is also a very precise filler for depressed scars.

Belotero Balance®, like Juvéderm® and Restylane®, is made of hyaluronic acid or HA. HA naturally exists as a component of your skin. By binding to water, it fills in wrinkles and folds, allowing immediate and smooth correction

RADIESSE® dermal filler is made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel, and is injected into the skin through a simple and minimally invasive procedure.

RADIESSE® dermal filler is the ideal choice for total facial contouring. It can restore a healthy, youthful appearance, enhance your existing features, help you defy age and gravity, and increase your confidence – all without invasive surgery or scarring.

Radiesse® dermal filler works with your own body in a remarkable way. Upon injection, it immediately adds volume to safely contour, correct, and beautify facial features. And unlike other fillers, RADIESSE® dermal filler continues to work over time. With its patented microsphere technology, it starts a process called collagenesis, stimulating your body to produce new collagen and encouraging collagen to grow around the injection area. RADIESSE® dermal filler actually helps your body create its own naturally younger look, setting a new standard in facial contouring and augmentation.

Artefill® (also referred to as Bellafill®)

Artefill® is a dual-acting wrinkle filler. Once it’s injected into the deep portion of the skin under the wrinkle, the collagen in Artefill® visibly corrects the wrinkle. Over time the collagen is absorbed by the body but the PMMA microspheres remain in place providing the support your skin needs for a long-lasting, natural feeling wrinkle correction. The PMMA microspheres induce your body to grow new collagen into the injected area, further enhancing the lasting results.

This in-office procedure takes minutes to perform. You may receive a topical anesthetic to lessen any minor discomfort. After the procedure you can return to your normal daily activities. The results are immediate and may improve over time as your body’s natural collagen grows into the area of injection. It works equally well on both women and men.

Restylane® is the first injectable composed of NASHA™ gel, Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. It’s proven to give long-lasting correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds, with results that last six months or even longer. It has an excellent safety profile and no allergy testing is required. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is completely bio-compatible with human hyaluronic acid.

In a simple procedure with an ultra fine needle, Restylane® is injected directly into the mid-to-deep dermis for the long-lasting correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. It works equally well on both men and women.  Read more . . .

Perlane® is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler that has been used to soften wrinkles and facial lines. It is also a popular filler for lip augmentation, facial depressions, and facial scarring. It can be used in both sexes.

Perlane® is made from non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid gel. Perlane® is a non animal injectable product and does not pose any risk for allergies. Hyaluronic acid is a resilient chemical and can easily adjust and mold to the facial contours. No prior skin testing is required prior to the injection of Perlane®.

The hyaluronic acid in Perlane® augments the body’s natural supply, which can become depleted with age. The injected Perlane® fills up scars, lines and wrinkles on the face. Perlane® is not a permanent product and is broken down in the body. The cosmetic benefits last 6 – 8 months.

Where does JUVÉDERM® work?
Everyone’s skin ages differently and JUVÉDERM® may be used to rejuvenate multiple problem areas. From smile lines to vertical lip lines, you can smooth away unwanted wrinkles and restore natural contours.

How does JUVÉDERM® work?
Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds – like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth. Using a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and
smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.

It’s long-lasting and it’s the only hyaluronic acid filler FDA approved to last up to one year with one treatment. It’s a smooth-consistancy gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel when properly administered. It is formulated with lidocaine, a common anesthetic, to improve the comfort of your treatment.

JUVÉDERM® is safe and effective for different skin types and colors with no increased risks of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring. Because JUVÉDERM® is a simple, non-surgical wrinkle treatment, there is minimal recovery or downtime – and the results are instant! Let Dr. Cadoux or other qualified clinicians on our staff personalize your treatment for achieving the best results.

How is Belotero Balance® administered?

Belotero Balance® is injected into the skin using a small needle.

A “touch up” injection is often given 2 weeks after the first injection to get the optimal smoothing and rounding of skin or to make the effect last longer. You and Dr. Cadoux will decide whether a second “touch up” injection is needed later on. In one study, 67 out of 93 subjects had a second injection of Belotero Balance®. In another study, 103 out of 118 subjects were given a second injection.

How long does Belotero Balance® last?

The filling effect of Belotero Balance® lasts about 6 months and then slowly goes away.

Does Belotero Balance® have any side effects?

As with all fillers, the most common side effects seen after injection were swelling, bruising, redness, and hardening that resolve within one week. More rare side effects may include swelling that lasts longer, unevenness or firmness in the area injected, and as with any injection, there may be a risk of infection.

How is a RADIESSE® treatment performed?
RADIESSE® is injected into the skin with an ultra fine needle during a simple, safe, quick, and minimally invasive procedure. RADIESSE® treatment requires little to no downtime, with most patients returning to normal activities immediately after treatment.

How soon can I expect RADIESSE® results and how long will the results last?
The results are immediate. RADIESSE® continues to deliver results as it stimulates your body to produce new collagen. Results may last a year or more in many patients. Since results may vary, be sure to discuss your expectations with your doctor.

How many RADIESSE® treatments will I need?
Many patients will achieve their desired result after just one or two treatments. To ensure your satisfaction with the treatment, your physician might schedule a follow-up visit, where a touch up treatment might be recommended.

Does RADIESSE® have any side effects?
Normal, injection-related reactions such as mild irritation, bruising, edema, swelling, itching, discoloration, or tenderness at the injection site may occur. These conditions typically resolve themselves within a week. Most people return to normal activities immediately.

Could I have an allergic reaction to RADIESSE®?
Radiesse is biocompatible. You do not need to undergo skin allergy testing, which is common with certain animal-based or permanent filler agents. However, if you believe you are having an allergic reaction to RADIESSE® or any other dermal filler, seek medical attention immediately.

Is RADIESSE® permanent?
No. Treatment results are long-lasting, but not permanent. Over time the tiny calcium-based microspheres gradually break down into calcium and phosphate ions which are safely and naturally absorbed into your body, leaving your own newly produced collagen in their place.

Do RADIESSE® injections hurt?
Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure,
your physician may anesthetize the treatment area.

How does Artefill differ from temporary fillers?
Temporary dermal fillers are made of different kinds of natural or synthetic materials that are completely absorbed by the body over time and, as a result, wrinkle correction usually lasts for only 3-12 months. The PMMA microspheres in Artefill remain intact at the treatment site and provide structural support to give you long lasting wrinkle improvement.

Is Artefill® safe?
Yes. Artefill® has proven to be a safe and effective dermal filler for the correction of wrinkles and was approved by the U.S. FDA in October 2006.

Are there any other treatment concerns with Artefill®?
Yes. If you have any skin outbreaks (e.g. cysts, pimples, rashes, hives, infection) near the injection site, you should postpone treatment until they clear. If you are taking aspirin (NSAIDs) or anti-inflammatory drugs or have any medical condition that affects your blood, you may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection sites. This is true of all fillers.

In addition, you should inform us if:

  • You have had any treatments for smile lines in the last 6 months
  • You are receiving UV light therapy
  • You are currently on immunosuppressive therapy (medication commonly prescribed for those who have undergone an organ transplant, or are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, or cancer)

Are there any possible side effects with Artefill®?
As with any injectable wrinkle filler, you can expect mild swelling and reddening at the treatment site. These side effects are usually gone within 24 hours. Occasionally, there is mild bruising that typically disappears in three to seven days. Less common side effects include rash and itching more than 48 hours after treatment, persistent swelling or redness, and increased sensitivity at some or all injection sites. Two other rare potential side effects of all dermal fillers may be lumps and granulomas, both of
which can be treated by your physician.

When will I see results with Artefill® and how long will the results last?
You will see results immediately. In the U.S. clinical study, full wrinkle correction was maintained for up to one year. Improvements often last five years or more.

Is one treatment enough to get the look I want?
Most people get the results they want with one or two treatments, depending on the depth of their wrinkles and folds. When you have your follow-up appointment in four to six weeks, you can decide if you would like to further enhance your results.

How will my face feel following Artefill® treatment?
Your face will feel natural, you will see the results immediately and be able to return to your normal daily activities. There is usually no post-procedure discomfort.

How will I look as my skin ages after treatment with Artefill®?
Studies have shown that patients injected with microsphere-enhanced collagen still reflect a natural look in both their overall facial appearance as well as in the area treated 5 years from their initial treatment. These patients were surveyed and had a 90% satisfaction rating related to their wrinkle correction and experience with Artefill. As with all dermal fillers, the artistry and training of the clinician are crucial to good results.

Why is a skin test required before treatment with Artefill®?
The skin test is a safety precaution to ensure that you are not allergic to the bovine collagen or anesthetic contained in Artefill.
